Located in a prominent position on Barras Bridge, King's Gate provides Newcastle University's threshold services for visitors and students. The building comprises mostly open plan accommodation arranged over five storeys, uniting many of the University's administrative departments previously located in disparate buildings across the campus. The frontage is glazed to allow views in at street level and out over St. Thomas Green. Solar shading is provided via a fixed louvre structure spanning the length of the building. The glazing reflects the surroundings by day and transforms the building by night, revealing the dynamic internal environment through the carefully illuminated envelope. The bold glazed structure is framed by the natural sandstone rainscreen cladding system, which unites the overall composition and visually knits the building into the urban streetscape.
