The site was owned by South Lanarkshire Council and originally had a day care centre on it that was surplus to the Councils requirements. It was sold to Arklet Housing Association and they organised to have the building demolished and the site cleared. Planning permission was sort for 12 two-bedroom units on three floors that were required to meet the Standards of Housing for Varying Needs. The four ground floor 2 bedroom units where all designed as barrier free accommodation with wet floor showers, the provision of a 8 person disabled lift allows access to all floors with the top four flats having their own balconies. The site is generally flat and there is good access to local shops and public transport that will allow the future residents to live independent lives. The development is equipped with a Wardens Call system which can be expanded to meet the needs of the individual resident this coupled with the type of construction has meant that units can easily and quickly be adapted. The use of good insulation, doubled glazed hardwood windows and whole house ventilation will mean the EPC for the development will be a high B. During the course of the design we entered into discussion with the police and the development meets the requirements of Secured by Design.
