Bidwells Architects designed this new-build project to provide state-of?the-art learning and book storage space in support of Hughes Hall?s growing postgraduate student population. It has been constructed within the grounds of the college and makes the most of the mature garden context whilst relating to both the adjacent Grade II listed buildings and modern student residences. Site constraints demanded that the building elements be lifted over the roof of the listed College building and the construction methodology was all geared toward light-weight materials and easily maneuvered frame elements. An almost fully glazed fa?ade onto the garden and careful manipulation of internal views, circulation and sensitive book storage has achieved a very open and expansive feel within a compact plan. Internal finishes generate a calm and congenial atmosphere for learning and have been extended into existing College spaces forming a coherent link between new and old.
