The project involved the conversion of a conservatory of an existing end of terrace house in Ealing Broadway, London. The client, a young couple up-scaling, have appointed us during the exchange process of the purchase to explore the value of the property and obtain a planning application within exchange/completion timeframes. The uncommon end of terrace location abutting the neighbouring garden, was used to an advantage and a series of facade openings were added to the rear and side of the extension and original house to optimise the quantum of light penetrating the depth of the house. This was enhanced further with the addition of a small open to sky courtyard in between the original house and the extension with a window seat that often serves as a reading corner for the couple. The study nook is situated parallel to the courtyard to provide a flexible use of this space, a level of privacy and separation when required. The rhythm of the new colonnades of the extension is brought into the existing part of the house to link the old and new into a free-flowing experience. Internally, the colonnades wrap along the roof to form new rooflights that add to the brightness of the space. The use of earthy materials such as clay and timber in the extension create a softness and sense of comfort in the open plan living and kitchen spaces. During the summer, the large crittal doors to the rear of the house are opened up to seamlessly connect the internal and external spaces. The paved outdoor deck followed by the softscaped garden provides a variety of spaces to enjoy.
