Homewood Lodge is a 18th Century, Grade II listed house located the village of Northill, Bedfordshire, approximately 8 miles South-East of Bedford. The main entrance was in the original part of the house, resulting in a convoluted route through the ancillary spaces arriving at the kitchen and small dining room which was the heart of the home for the clients. This disconnect continued with the whole of the Eastern side of the house being under-utilised and distant, providing no real use other than a few guest bedrooms. The new proposal aims to reconnect and enhance the historic property, creating more functional accommodation all while bringing a sensitive modern aesthetic within the enclosed woodland context of the site. The front door has been moved to the middle of the plan to create a sense of arrival with scenic views out in front and the opportunity to go either left into the living spaces or right the private side of the house. Design cues and materials on the existing house have been translated over to the renovated and extended parts of the rear elevation to create a modern aesthetic that results in a balance between the old and new. The kitchen space benefits from a vaulted ceiling and a large, glazed gable which brings in daylight as well as providing views out to the garden and woodland beyond. Sliding doors open along the length of the living space out to the external terrace, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside.
