Lake District National Park
The brief for the project was to maintain the charm of the Lake District Cottage whilst introducing a contemporary wing to accommodate modern family life. Working closely with the Lake District National Park Authority a modern extension, which followed the contours of the existing roof line, evolved. The old cottage was taken back to the original walls and the roof was removed. New floors and roof allowed for underfloor heating, improved headroom and assisted with the alteration of the layout. Our clients wanted to incorporate renewable technology into the build. An underfloor heating system was installed with ground source heat pump and borehole technology. The building is super insulated throughout and the highest quality windows were installed. A sedum roof tied in the green theme of this project adding insulation and reducing surface run off for rainwater. Local materials were used where possible including Burlington Slate on the cottage roof and local stone cladding. The vernacular cottage contrasts with the contemporary glazed extension.
