BDP was commissioned in 1990 to develop a masterplan for the first comprehensive refurbishment of the Grade I listed Royal Albert Hall since its construction after the Great Exhibition of 1851. The work had been given impetus by a £40m grant of National Lottery money from the Arts Council and the National Heritage Memorial Fund. The refurbishment has improved conditions for the audience, both within the auditorium itself and throughout the foyers with re-set seating tiers, a new ventilation system, re-cast acoustics and new refreshment, hospitality, foyer and bar areas. Accommodation has been upgraded backstage for artists and staff making it easier to put on a wider variety of shows and other events in the hall. The terraces and gardens south of the hall have been reconstructed to create an underground serviced yard entered off Prince Consort Road, giving direct access to the stage, kitchens and plant rooms in the basement. The roadway around the hall has been paved over to create a major new pedestrian space. The public foyers have been expanded by glazing in the east and west porches and the existing south porch has been rebuilt to match the other three. An effective ventilation system has been installed in the in the auditorium to improve audience comfort. Throughout this vast programme of works stretching the decade, the Royal Albert Hall has remained open to the public, hosting over 300 events a year.
