In late 2005 the UK Head Office for leading healthcare company Roche in Welwyn Garden City brought together under one roof more than 1,100 employees from teams that were previously scattered across four separate sites in the town. The new building is based around a covered ‘street’ which acts as a focal point. As well as providing a space for people to meet and talk, the street connects the open-plan work spaces together with a range of facilities including a restaurant, café, health and fitness centre and library. The 21,800 m² three-storey building has achieved a BREEAM Environmental Performance Index of 10 out of 10 and an ‘Excellent’ rating, featuring a cut in CO2 emissions to around 20% below current Building Regulation limits. Other sustainable aspects include timber framed curtain walling, ground water cooling from boreholes and ammonia refrigeration plant which contributes nothing to global warming and does not deplete ozone. This project was an exemplar in collaborative working with commitment from all involved parties including, and especially, the client, saving enough time and money to build a previously deferred pharmacology block using the same supplier team.
