This new teaching facility and resource centre is the first major piece in the regeneration of Keyworth Street, the main street through the university. The nine-storey building sets flexible teaching space alongside a west facing glazed hall, acting as a naturally ventilated buffer to the teaching rooms, mediating air and light from the hot, bright side of the building. The “western hall” faces Keyworth Street, and forms the entrance threshold at street level, as well as the “window on the world” to the activities up the building. Set within the hall are twin towers of organic teaching space, designed as a “Romeo and Juliet” pairing of rooms and terrace balconies. These structures are created out of wood (laminated veneered lumber), to reflect the informality of the learning space, counterpoint to the rigour of the flexible teaching alongside. The foyer level of the building is dedicated to lectures, auditorium, café, and exhibition space, with the studio space within the roof curve being the new home to the University School of Architecture.
