New Build
The largest shopping centre in Scotland opened its door on 25 October in Pollok on Glasgow’s south side. Built on the site of the old Pollok centre, the 75 acre site boasts 80,000 m2 of prime retail and leisure space with over 4,500 car parking spaces, and an upgraded transport interchange. A further phase of restaurants and cafes will open in early 2008. It is estimated than 3,500 additional jobs will be brought to one of the most deprived areas in the UK. The “vision” for Silverburn is to revive the civic and community heart of Pollok, creating a quality environment, with a range of uses and powerful sense of place that can live up to the role as a primary retail destination within the central belt of Scotland. This is achieved through a strong dynamic relationship between quality architecture and a vibrant mix of uses, where the desire to realise the development potential of the site is balanced by a concern to address the social dimension of the public spaces, creating a place to which people are attracted and where they will feel both stimulated and secure. A low energy approach has been adopted for both environmental and smoke control systems. By controlling direct sunlight entering the mall, heat build-up can be controlled through passive means whilst still maintaining sufficient natural daylight thereby not requiring additional artificial lighting. Through the inclusion of ‘roof pod ventilators’ environmental control has been achieved with the omission of mechanical air handling plant thereby reducing both construction and ongoing running costs. The ‘roof pod ventilators’ serve a dual purpose acting as natural smoke extract.
