Completed in September 2016, ‘The Curve’ is the key public building of the ‘Heart of Slough’ regeneration scheme for Slough’s town centre. BBLUR has been working with Slough Borough Council since 2008, transforming the town with notable projects that include: the new bus station, wider public realm and Station forecourt. Planning for ‘The Curve’ was granted in 2010. The gateway building, a gently curved silver tube inspired by astronomer William Herschel’s work, wraps around the rear of a grade II listed flint Church. This relationship forms two new public squares and a reading garden between the buildings. Glazed East and West facades welcome visitors to the building signalling a pedestrian route at ground floor that links the town centre with new residential and commercial developments to the West. The 4,500sqm, 3 storey, 90m long building was conceived as a vibrant community hub to accommodate a library, 280 seat performance space, teaching spaces, Registrar’s office and museum. In 2012 CZWG joined BBLUR to lead the design of the interiors. The vibrant internal spaces complement the sculptural exterior to create a memorable new landmark for Slough.
