bblur architecture developed the pavilion design and detail design of a fabric walkway over the O2 Arena, one of Europe’s most successful entertainment venues, in conjunction with structural Engineers Buro Happold. The concept, by RSHP, creates a roof walk over the iconic Dome providing visitors with a unique view of London. Along with the new Emirates Cable Car and the Siemens Centre the O2 walkway helps create a new visitor destination in that part of London. The project consists of a blue tensile fabric walkway suspended, by steel cables, from the twelve masts of the Dome. The walkway bridges from glass lift/stair gateway towers and platform on the south, to a 53m high central viewing platform at the apex of the roof and back down the north side of the dome. The visitor experience is designed to be ‘extreme’ with the 30 deg climb to the top being just that, however the design is fully inclusive. The walkway has aluminium clad accommodation pavilions at each end. The south pavilion includes an orientation and changing rooms with the north incorporating a small retail unit.
