The Park and Ride facility is a new infrastructure project consisting of a 6 level reinforced concrete car park structure, providing 1000 car park spaces on Devil’s Tower Road. The project is situated in a sensitive location at the foot of the Rock of Gibraltar and adjacent to 4 storey residential buildings. In response the building is organised in layers with car parking functions to the North and pedestrian circulation walkways animating the southern street facade and served by three vertical circulation cores and are terminated at either end with sculptural external steel stairs. The South elevation has a gently curving metal solar screen formed of extruded aluminium creating an elegant elevational treatment with a horizontal emphasis. The project was built in two phases with the first phase reaching completion in autumn 2010 and becoming operational while Phase 2 was under construction. The facility became fully operational in late 2011. The Park and Ride Facility was designed by the partners of bblur architecture together with 3DReid.
