Listed Building - Grade II*
BBH Chartered Architects Limited
9 Duke Street , DARTMOUTH , Devon , TQ6 9PY , United Kingdom
Five businesses and six flats in the town were destroyed or severely damaged in a devastating fire during May 2010. Among the buildings destroyed in Fairfax Place and Higher Street were 16th Century Tudor buildings with English Heritage Grade I and Grade II* listed status. Following extensive survey work which was carried out in a series of stages over the month that followed the fire, we have worked closely with both SHDC and English Heritage to replicate and restore the buildings to reflect exactly their original presence, both in terms of use and appearance within the old town context. All the existing frontages were repaired and retained to match that which existed and likewise the roof scape has been reinstated and retains the form and proportions as established from previous photographic evidence and site survey records. In addition to the survey and construction drawings which were necessary, we prepared detailed submission documents on behalf of all our clients to provide all relevant information to accompany the full listed building consent and provide continuity between all buildings and owners that has helped spring forward a successful conclusion for all. This contained the relevant design and access statements along with necessary input from Keystone Historic Building Consultants who have produced an assessment of the fire damaged listed buildings from a historic and archaeological perspective in order to aid the understanding of the built fabric, both remaining and that which was lost during the fire.
