New Build
BBH Chartered Architects Limited
9 Duke Street , DARTMOUTH , Devon , TQ6 9PY , United Kingdom
The client approached us with an exciting opportunity to convert an historic traditional Linhay Barn into ancillary holiday accommodation within the setting of an overall listed former farm complex outside of Dittisham. The building was in reasonable condition as a barn but as is normal in these cases required detail consideration of levels, waterproofing and efficient insulation solutions in order to meet modern requirements without losing what would be important to retain in terms of character and charm. The approach is a modern one but using a natural palette of well suited and robust materials which retain an agricultural feel yet set out an opportunity for a modern interior design with double height spaces, feature oak trusses and shaped free standing oak stair which all give a clear indication of the buildings heritage and make the most of the full height glazed walls which become possible due to the predominantly open elevation and stone columns that are significant with structures of this type. The living spaces are arranged at first floor to make the most of the levels which are raised to the parking area behind and as such modest and quiet bedroom spaces occupy the ground floor. This has allowed us to have incorporated double doors and juliet balconies so that the upper floor can be opened out to the valley views and farm pond which typify the rural setting.
