Southways is located in a rural location and is within the green belt and area of natural beauty. The scope of the project included the total refurbishment of an Edwardian style house which had previously been split into two properties. The refurbishment was carried out in 2 phases enabling the clients to remain in occupation throughout the project. The refurbishment works involved the total remodelling of the inside of the property to a high standard of finish. Alterations to the existing house included removing, altering and providing new windows and doors, construction of new dormer windows to make habitable the existing roof space accommodation and structural alterations to increase room sizes within the property. A new entrance lobby and porch was constructed as a focal point at the front of the house. During the first phase of the project the property was extended by construction of a new garage block and a semi underground basement The garage block included a new double garage with ancillary accommodation over, a ground floor gym and a utility room/link into the existing house along with a new feature stairs down to the basement extension. The new basement extension was cut into the chalk hillside of the sloping site and finished with a grass roof to reduce the appearance of the overall mass of the extension when viewed from across the valley in this area of outstanding natural beauty. The extension includes an 18m indoor swimming pool, ancillary accommodation and a steam room and links to a south facing timber deck providing glimpses of the valley below. The grounds and gardens have been substantially landscaped during the project, including new seating and planting areas and also revised entrance drive with automatic gates at both entrances.
