The Church building in Cambourne provides an important element at the heart of the community in this new town. The site lies at the east end of the High Street and so the new Church forms an key focal point and end to this central area of Cambourne. The building is orientated to address the High Street to the west, so that the main volume of the Church and its entrance are clearly visible from this approach. By setting the Church back from the street corner, a forecourt space is created which provide a public area for day-to-day use, as well as a gathering space for important events in the life of the Church. The Church has two primary internal spaces, the main hall and the foyer. The design places these at the centre of the building plan. The ancillary spaces then sit in two wings either side of these main spaces. The separation of the two wings means that, in plan layout, they can be used independently. The size and proportion of each wing is therefore suited to the particular uses within. Another reason for distinguishing the main hall and foyer from the ancillary spaces is that these are the two spaces that require verticality and volume. The tall internal height, emphasised by the full-height vertical glazing, gives a sense of openness and airiness to the spaces. It should give the user a sense of being in a special building. Externally, the height and volume of these spaces reinforces this and marks the Church out as distinct from the buildings nearby. With the form and materials of the building we have tried to bring together the two types of architecture found in Cambourne: the traditional domestic of the residential areas and the modern architecture of the business park. The scale of the main roof lends itself to a more commercial material and again marks it out as a special building. Painted render and timber cladding are used throughout the residential areas. Planning Approval was granted in December 2008. Phase 1 began on site in early 2009, with Kier Marriott as the main contractor, and was completed in October 2009. The building was officially opened by the Duke of Gloucester on 13th July 2010.
