The Studio, Darlington Wharf , Darlington Road , BATH , BA2 6NL , United Kingdom
This area of Plymouth had been badly damaged by bombing during the last war and Charles Cross Church stands in the centre of the roundabout and is retained as a bombed ruin memorial to this period. This site became the 'gateway' to the centre of Plymouth in the Abercrombie grand replanning of the city immediately after the Second World War. The former 1960s building on the development site was 'Turnball's Garage' which contained a filling station and servicing building. This latter building with hexagonal folded concrete roof has been retained and incorporated into the new development. The scheme comprises a 20000 sq ft Staples office furniture store, a 'Gala' Bingo Hall for 1200 people and smaller retail units at the rear. The finishes are a mixture of smooth & rusticated forticrete blocks and smooth render with a cornice feature to the staircase towers.
