This project involved a complete redesign of an original 1970s ‘Barratts’ home which is located within one of Shrewsbury town centres most prestigious conservation areas. Base Architects were commissioned to provide a ‘concept to completion’ service from the initial design stage through to administration of the onsite contract works during the construction phase. Prior to the addition of this property to Kennedy Road the street was primarily made up of large 3 storey town houses dating back to the 1800’s. Unfortunately this property had not lasted the test of time architecturally against these original buildings and our Clients were keen to pursue a review of the existing architecture. The dwelling was constrained by a high level access to the property which in effect placed the first floor of the building at driveway level. Landscaping was also a key element of the project to ensure considered access could be provided. As part of the proposal we also formed a swimming pool to the underside of the driveway, and extensive retaining structures were put in place to ensure the buildings footprint and usable space was maximised within the site boundary. By utilising this ‘below ground’ space it enabled us to ensure that an extensive rear garden was also provided with access from each primary room on the ground floor. Materials were carefully considered to ensure that the building was not only contemporary but also married in with its surroundings. Render colours were based upon stone colouring within the local vernacular alongside cedar timber which would over time silver and blend in with the surroundings trees. The scheme went on to win a regional design award and be nominated further for a national design award.
