This project involved the review of an existing dwelling, which was to be demolished, and investigate how the remaining site could be utilised to develop two new dwellings within an important conservation area of Chester, overlooking the city walls and racecourse. The brief for each dwelling was to provide a high quality family home that responded to the prestigious location. There were several constraints that we considered within the developmental stages, alongside the location of the dwellings. The site was constrained by a significant slope to the rear, leading down towards the racecourse, which was integrated into the proposal by utilising a sunken terrace in the rear gardens to provide a connection between the landscaped rear garden and basement spaces. The integration of the basement level also allowed for the desired leisure spaces to be integrated without creating a dominating mass on the site. The existing street scene provides an eclectic mix of styles and we designed the dwellings to respond to this. The front of the dwellings have been designed in such a way that the proportions of the window respond to some of the more traditional properties, whilst utilising projected gables and porches to provide relief and interest. An area of feature glazing has been utilised to the rear, maximising use of natural daylight and views towards the racecourse. We chose the materials carefully to provide a blend with the context without compromising the contemporary elements that were used to elevate the scheme.
