Contact Practice
Bartlett | Mettham are dedicated to the creative re-invention of existing buildings. Using thoughtful, context driven design to revitalise inadequate and underutilised spaces; whether through refurbishment, extension, change of use, or delicate restoration. The practice was co-founded by Dean Bartlett and Eleanor Mettham. Dean began as a mason, learning the patience, precision, and respect for materials that true craft demands. Now with over a decade of professional experience, he serves as Co President of the York Architectural Association, sits on the York Design Awards committee, and the advisory board for the University of York’s new School of Architecture. Eleanor’s interests lie in the field of architectural ornamentation and hand-drawn representation, exploring these themes through academic writing as well as practice. Alongside her research, Eleanor has gained practical experience across heritage, healthcare, and residential projects bringing both sensitivity and imagination. Bartlett | Mettham see architecture as an act of care, materialising through an attention to detail at every scale of a proposal; where the floor meets the wall, the door meets the frame, or when one material joins another. It is at these junctions there is an adoration of the joint. Our work is guided by curiosity and care to craft imaginative spaces shaped for people, purpose, and place.
