Work has begun on a modern five/six-bedroom family house located in a picturesque old farmyard in West Devon and overlooking Dartmoor National Park. The new house, planned on a curve, links with the old granary to create a substantial new house that is both modern but timeless. The accommodation is inverted so that the living spaces can enjoy the stunning view of the moor over the outbuildings. The bedrooms located on the ground floor, have individual terraces out onto the southwest facing wildflower garden, The new building uses natural materials, such as local stone, to soften the modern form and create a harmony with the existing buildings. A curved zinc roof will complement the hues of the Delabole slate to the old granary. High performance insulation and double-glazing will create a modern thermally efficient and low-energy home. The granary will be fully refurbished to create a separate living area, office and an additional bedroom and bathroom. The derelict adjoining barn will be converted into a new double height studio with exposed stone and timber trusses. A key architectural feature is the two bridges. A covered glass walkway connects the Granary with the main kitchen. A further metal and wooden walkway will bridge the driveway providing access to the lawn above the existing 1970s garage, above which is planned an unexpected garden complete with outdoor Jacuzzi. A feature moat will sweep in front of the house to create a threshold to the new drive, and surface water drainage channel as part of the Sustainable Drainage System. The moat will channel water down a series of cascading steps beneath the glass walkway into a feature pond.
