The Old Barns - Fowlescombe Farm A complex of 18th & 19th Century Shippen Barns in South Devon has been converted into two holiday-lets and a mixed-use event space for local activity groups. New interventions are modern and simply detailed to compliment the rustic character of the existing building. Large sliding shutters formed from green oak hit and miss timber slats provide solar shading and privacy between holiday lets, whilst internally creating a dramatic play of light and shadow. The original scissor trusses were restored and bespoke galvanised steel truss ties installed to add strength for the new roof. The polished concrete floor is made using local Kingsbridge aggregates and the whole room is lit by two modern suspended lighting tracks. A new bridge links the farmhouse drive with the upper floor, event hall. The bridge provides vehicular unloading and access directly into to the main hall and a gathering spot for visitors. The chunky galvanised steel beams act as a bump rail for the vehicles and the green oak compliments the shutters. A new route from the Farmhouse through the courtyard and down to the environmental farm, was introduced for use by the visiting activity groups. The courtyard is finished from exposed cut edge shillet on angle to create a traditional finish with a contemporary aesthetic.
