This spacious, environmentally sustainable and energy efficient “L-shaped” family home is a made up of two elements and features a steel frame at ground floor level, full height glazing and vertical timber cladding. The first element is a highly-insulated timber ‘box’, housing the sleeping accommodation. The steel frame ‘table’ supports the timber-framed box at the upper levels while it cantilevers in all directions, appearing to float above a clerestory plinth. The second ‘leg’ of the L is made up of a single-storey timber frame structure set perpendicular to the two-storey form which houses the garage and ancillary spaces. Internally the generous ground floor open plan living area features a double height void and is glazed floor to ceiling along the south of the building, creating a light, contemporary space. Transparency and connection between the internal spaces and the garden is created through large sliding doors which open onto a sheltered courtyard-style garden. A simple palette of timber, brick and white render complements the building’s bold form.
