Working in collaboration with the young people of Tadley, we have designed a striking two-storey building that caters for around 100 young adults and houses two multi-purpose halls, a series of activity pods and break-out spaces, music room, meeting room, catering, and WC facilities, as well as an outside all-weather recreation space. Dark grey fibre cement cladding acts as the skin of the building, wrapping around the roof and walls, creating a seamless mass into which windows and openings are punched. These breaks in the form introduce warmer timber tones through vertical cladding which reveal the internal spaces. Inside, walls and ceilings use plywood while the exposed roof structure is made of glued laminated timber and plywood stressed-skin panels. Internally the building plan is based around a flexible ‘spine wall’ of storage and activity pods. These activity pods, clad in colourful Trespa panels, are conceived as ‘secret spaces’ situated throughout the building. Vinyl sheet flooring is used in the entrance and circulation areas, helping to delineate spaces while injecting colour into the building.
