Brownfield site, New Build
1st Floor, St. Georges House , 56 Peter Street , MANCHESTER , M2 3NQ
The Christie at Macclesfield is a fully integrated cancer treatment centre providing specialist care closer to home for patients across East Cheshire, North Staffordshire and the High Peak. Previously, many patients had to travel more than an hour to Manchester; the new facility now serves over 1,500 people locally, saving around 90 hours of travel during a typical six-week course of treatment. Located on the Macclesfield General Hospital estate, the 28,000 sq ft building delivers a full range of cancer services. It includes two linear accelerators for radiotherapy, a diagnostic CT scanner, a 16-bay chemotherapy suite, eight outpatient examination rooms, and dedicated information and support services. The centre provides for more than 46,000 patient visits each year, supporting over 12,500 radiotherapy and 6,800 chemotherapy and haematology treatments. AFL Architects acted as Lead Designer, providing both architectural and interior design services. The design is defined by natural light, patient-centred circulation, and a distinct material palette that references The Christie’s wider identity while responding to the local context. Brass cladding, chosen for its ability to weather from bright copper to a deep matt finish, is paired with local grey sandstone to ground the building within its Cheshire setting. The curving forms create a welcoming new entrance and provide sheltered outdoor spaces while maintaining strong connections between waiting areas and the landscape. The project was delivered to BIM Level 2 maturity, coordinated by AFL’s in-house specialists. A fully integrated Revit model allowed for precise collaboration across all disciplines, supporting both design quality and cost validation. The model was also developed into a VR walkthrough, enabling stakeholder engagement and informed decision-making throughout. Completed on time and under budget, The Christie at Macclesfield demonstrates how advanced digital design processes, careful material selection, and a focus on patient experience can combine to deliver a high-quality healthcare environment that supports world-leading cancer care.
