Calderdale

1st Floor, St. Georges House , 56 Peter Street , MANCHESTER , M2 3NQ
The Rainbow Child Development Centre in Elland, delivered for Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, represents a major relocation and transformation project, providing purpose-built facilities for children and families in the community. The scheme has been recognised nationally, receiving Refurbishment Project of the Year at the IHEEM Healthcare Estates Awards 2023 and shortlisted at the FX Design Awards 2023 and Healthcare Design Awards 2023. AFL Architects led the architectural and interior design of the new centre, reimagining Clock House, a former mill and office building, into a welcoming clinical environment. Working closely with the Trust and stakeholders, the design team created a central hub that brings together a wide range of services in a single, accessible location. Facilities include colourful treatment and clinic rooms, a sensory room with advanced technology, and a compliant Changing Place toilet. Dedicated staff areas incorporate flexible office space, hot desking, meeting rooms and breakout facilities. For families, a playroom and outdoor play area with specialist flooring and canopy create safe, engaging spaces for children. Sustainability and social value were embedded throughout the project. Local contractors and materials were used wherever possible, including bespoke artwork from a local artist whose nature-inspired graphics enrich the reception and playroom areas. The result is a supportive and uplifting setting that combines clinical excellence with a positive experience for children and families, while also providing a high-quality working environment for staff.
