Cobham Training Campus unites all of the club’s football operations across a 140-acre site in Surrey, combining elite performance, rehabilitation and medical facilities within a carefully designed landscape. The project has been recognised for its design quality and sustainability, receiving both the MSA Design Award in the Sustainability category and the Commercial Property Award. The first team training centre was completed in 2007, followed by the Academy and Community Pavilion in 2008. A later extension in 2014 expanded the gym, medical and office areas through the sensitive infill of an existing moat, increasing floor space by 25% while respecting the site’s green belt setting. The BREEAM Excellent facility accommodates 30 pitches, including three with undersoil heating and six to Premier League standard, alongside an indoor pitch, media centre, rehabilitation spaces and a 56ft hydrotherapy pool. The architectural form takes inspiration from the natural ground plane, with a green roof that enhances biodiversity and reduces visual impact. Glazed facades maximise daylight while being protected by weathering metal panels that provide shading and texture. The moat infill extension features north-facing offices with frameless glazing to optimise natural light without solar gain. Flat glass rooflights bring daylight deep into the interior, ensuring the new facilities integrate seamlessly with the existing building. A second pavilion for youth and community use continues the campus’s architectural language, featuring free-weathering brass cladding, ochre-rendered plinths and horizontal curtain walling. Together, the buildings create a unified, high-performance environment in harmony with the surrounding landscape.
