The Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Broad Street Plaza, Halifax, represents a significant step in bringing vital healthcare services closer to the community. Located within a mixed-use commercial and leisure development, the centre offers a single point of access for a range of diagnostic tests, reducing reliance on hospital visits and improving accessibility for patients. The project was shaped through design workshops with key NHS stakeholders, focusing on priority spaces such as CT and X-ray rooms, the double-height waiting area, and a reimagined reception. The new entrance, connected to an existing NHS facility, was carefully designed to enhance capacity and modernise the patient experience while addressing the challenges of a sloped site and complex multi-tenant environment. AFL Architects led the design process, delivering a preferred layout rapidly to meet a strict 12-month programme. Modern methods of construction were explored to align with funding and scheduling requirements, while ensuring clinical efficiency and staff usability. The scheme required precision 3D modelling to resolve structural and service constraints, including reduced ceiling heights, integrated beam floors, and highly coordinated service runs for CT and X-ray gantries. The centre accommodates a broad range of diagnostic services, including CT, X-ray, DEXA bone density scanning, lung function testing, ECG and cardiology reporting, alongside multi-use clinical rooms designed for future flexibility. Delivered within the constraints of a live commercial environment, the Halifax CDC demonstrates how innovative design and stakeholder collaboration can successfully integrate advanced healthcare services into the heart of the community.
