This proposal presents a comprehensive plan to enhance the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Pilsworth Lake area while catering to the recreational needs of the surrounding community. Existing activities like angling will be supported, while new activities such as walking, nature watching and picnicking will be introduced. This diversification of recreational options ensures that the site appeals to a broader range of visitors. Two new buildings will be constructed to support these activities—a café with a small shop and a boathouse. These structures are designed to blend harmoniously with the landscape, using materials and construction methods that minimize carbon footprint. The café will serve as a gathering point for visitors, offering amenities and a place to appreciate the natural surroundings. The lake is an 11 acre stretch of water on the northern edge of Greater Manchester with two million people living within a 10 miles radius. It was formed from a well pit dug to supply a cotton mill that became obsolete in the mid-20th century. Since then, the pit has been filled with water creating coarse fishing opportunities and gradually nature has reasserted its presence. The proposal seeks to celebrate the unique heritage of the site, highlighting its significance in early industrialisation and World War II. By telling the story of the landscape and its historical importance, the proposal aims to foster a deeper connection between the community and its surroundings. The plan aims to increase biodiversity by ten percent, assisting the process of natural regeneration predominantly through the introduction of native species. This will contribute to the restoration of the natural ecosystem and promote a healthier environment for flora and fauna to thrive. The proposal emphasises sustainability in both design and function. Rain garden habitats will be introduced around the buildings to manage surface water runoff effectively while enhancing ecological diversity. This approach not only addresses practical needs but also integrates ecological features seamlessly into the built environment. Ultimately, the client's vision is to create a well-managed landscape park that attracts visitors while serving the needs of the local population. By offering accessible rural qualities and promoting sustainable development, the project aligns with the community's desire for social and environmental enrichment. In summary, the proposal represents a holistic approach to land management, combining ecological restoration, recreational development, heritage preservation, and community engagement. By transforming a brownfield site into a vibrant and sustainable asset, the project promises to enhance the quality of life for residents while preserving the natural beauty of the area.
