A relaxed collection of garden buildings, expressing a contemporary and sensitive approach to traditional materials. Taking cues from low walls of an existing piggery, the collection of buildings appear to have grown up with the land. Materials have been chosen for their familiarity and sensitivity to the surrounding landscape but have been cared for with a level of precision that retains contemporary character. The untreated timber boards, cut into differing widths and randomly distributed, take cues from traditional agricultural buildings and eliminate wastage. Internally, the position of a small kitchenette and bathroom have been discretely concealed behind a book case, whilst the living area focuses on the long grass of the meadow. A small window frames a view of the local church, its position adjusted carefully to suit the differing heights of the clients. The project won an RIBA Award in 2016.
