History and Context St Pancras Old Church is a building of ancient origins, located on a leafy site directly behind St Pancras International station. The building has a unique history that is evident in its architectural form and detailing, and which contrasts with many modern developments in the surrounding area. The church is Grade II* listed and forms an important focus for the local community, as well as a significant element within the wider landscape of St Pancras Gardens. The building is on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register due to significant structural defects and associated cracking of the external walls. Conservation Repairs A programme of repairs to the drainage system was successfully completed in 2015 with the aim of improving ground conditions. Following on from these works, a wider programme of conservation repairs is now needed to stabilise the superstructure and to carry out associated repairs and internal redecoration. ARTArchitects is developing architectural proposals for the necessary repair works, the purpose of which will be to ensure that the building can be removed from the Heritage at Risk Register, and the fabric of the building can be suitably conserved for the future. Re-ordering At the same time as these essential repair works are carried out, we are designing alterations to the existing Parish Room, at the west end of the Church, to provide additional toilets, new kitchen facilities, and interactive information resources. The aim of these works is to improve visitor engagement with the site’s heritage, to ensure that the building is fit for purpose as a place of worship, and to provide facilities needed for its use both as an events venue and for wider cultural and heritage activities.
