ARTArchitects was appointed to develop a scheme for a new All Saint's Church, Burnsbury on the existing church site adjacent to the Regent's Canal. The project comprise the design of the interior of the church, to be constructed in the shell below a proposed block of flats on the Carnegie Street site; and the design of a distinct frontage for the new church. The church development will cover the ground floor of the development, with an approximate footprint of 300-350 sqm, and a floor-to-ceiling height of around 5m. It is understood that the design will need to be developed around the requirements for circulation, storage and building services associated with the new flats above, the locations and arrangement of which are to be confirmed. The accommodation to be provided within the new church space is as follows: • A worship space to seat 120 people, with a dedicated altar/sanctuary, but an otherwise flexible layout to accommodate different types of church services, playgroups, cafe, seating, etc. • Entrance lobby and reception desk on Caledonian Road, or facing onto it. • Toliets that are accessible from all areas of the church independently, one of which will be an accessible WC. • A small hall/meeting room for 25 people. • A commercial-sized kitchen to be accessed from both the main worship space and the small hall independently, including suitable ventilation extract. • Two offices: one for the vicar, and a general office seating 2-4 people. • Storage within the main worship space for Bibles, computer projection equipment, tables and chairs (including all worship space chairs) so that the room can be cleared for functions as required. The new church is to comply with the principles of ‘Secure by Design’ and to have regard to sustainability and energy efficiency in the design. ARTArchitects has also been appointed to design the multi storey residential development above the proposed new church.
