We were approached by Crimple Hall Estates on an exciting opportunity to create a new retail destination on the fringe of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The proposals build on the strong reputation of the existing Crimple Hall Garden Centre and its desirable location The vision is to provide an open-plan artisan farmers market and restaurant, which creates an distinctive, capacious space to be populated by a series of free-standing stalls selling a variety of food items, and most importantly, sitting comfortably next to the existing garden centre and in the sensitive surroundings of Crimple Valley. The new building has a scale and materiality which relates to it’s semi-rural / edge of town location but most importantly, creates an identity for the building which relates to the adjacent garden centre but gives distinction and identity to the new offer, especially important to something which is roadside and needs to address a sensitive context. The building form is driven by its highly sustainable design, with natural ventilation and north lights giving rise to the saw-tooth style form, and taking advantage of the use of renewable technologies to reduce the need for mechanical services and energy input generally.
