The existing barn is sited within the curtilage of Bissick Manor, which is a Grade II Listed Building. The barn was formerly a mill with a lean to extension on the south west elevation and a workshop. Prior to the conversion and within the last decade remedial works had been carried out. Unfortunately for the barn it was repaired very un-sympathetically, which was detrimental to the Listing status. Our client had purchased the barn with Planning and Listed Building Consent approvals; however he wanted to undertake amendments to the approved drawings as the layouts did not suite his needs, nor make best use of the Barn. The roof was replaced with a traditional structure, the walls were re-built where necessary so that the existing concrete ring beam and blockwork could be removed. The walls were re-pointed by our clients with a soft hydraulic lime mortar giving a warm appearance which brought the barn back to life. Cement pointing was raked out and re-pointed with lime. New window and door openings received buff brick quoins and granite lintels. The former workshop was converted respectfully by keeping the open frontage and not creating any new openings on the northern elevation; this also reduced heat loss and introduced solar gains.
