New Build
Upper Twyford , Twyford , HEREFORD , Herefordshire , HR2 8AD , United Kingdom
In unique circumstances, Architype were selected to design and project manage a new school building on an existing school site in the wake of the original school falling victim to arson attack. With an additional opportunity for expansion A new school building on an existing school site; Architype took Wilkinson Primary School from 1.5 from-entry to 2 form-entry, a capacity of up to 420 pupils, in a Passivhaus design that aimed to improve the comfort and learning dynamic of users. Architype’s aim was to offer the pupils and staff a safe and comfortable school building in the wake of their original school falling victim to fire damage. We wanted to design a building that would help bring this community back together after the devastation of the fire, providing a sustainable centre for education and extra curricular activities for generations to come. Taking the brief beyond the necessary requirements, Architype addressed the schools future needs as a 21st-centrury learning environment. The design was rationalised with the Key stage 1 and nursery facilities on the ground floor and Key Stage 2 located on the first floor, united by the shared hall facilities and external soft play areas. This inclusive design focuses on a central ‘hub’ space on each floor for congregation and messy play, large classrooms and small classrooms to suit a varied pedagogy and quiet break out spaces for focused learning and relaxation.
