This family home, located in Lodsworth, West Sussex in the South Downs National Park, originally dates back to the 1950’s and had been derelict. Our design retained as much as possible of the original character whilst combining it with contemporary open-plan living. The proportions of the existing facade and windows were carefully reconfigured to provide a symmetrical backdrop for bijou extensions as a fresh appearance. These zinc clad bays complemented the new open plan ground floor layout by optimising daylight and views across the stunning countryside. They also formed a new first floor guest bedroom terrace and a brise-solei to protect a ground floor study from excessive solar gain. Upstairs, further reconfigurations were made to deliver a 6-bedroom family home. The existing building fabric underwent significant thermal improvements, paired with new building services supported by photovoltaics.
