Alteration to existing property
Our proposal for Lantern House sought to inject life into what was a dilapidated Victorian convenience store by reconfiguring the street facing façade, adding a new basement and carrying out a full internal refurbishment, creating a contemporary family home filled with light. Having changed use to residential some time ago, the existing façade was lacking identity and thus failing to offer a sense of ownership. By referencing subtle characteristics from the local vernacular and by playing with scale to introduce bold architectural elements, such as over-scaled windows and entrance bay, we created a distinctive façade, one that is embedded within its mid-terrace position and shines with street presence. Internally, a monochromatic colour range creates a sense of calm while the extensive use of timber intensifies tactility, promoting nature and supporting well-being.
