Alteration to existing property
Architect That, The Cottage , West Hampstead , London , NW3 , United Kingdom
On a street of Victorian terraces sits a 1950’s semi-detached house on a wedge-shaped plot. To create more space, the design is an angled two storey brick extension providing additional space and a new architectural identity. From the sliding front door to ‘floating’ kitchen and thin steel-framed doors, the project focuses on maximising space. At its heart is a faceted staircase, its underside creating a reading nook and, on the landing, a cushioned ‘den’ area. Designed for fluid family living, the large rooms can open and connect and close, permitting for both very active and serene modes. Dens throughout the house permit a sense of privacy and promote creativity whilst still within sight of the parents. The house has already transformed and become a fundamental part of the family’s physical and emotional every day life and by definition, identity. Despite its personal and bespoke nature it is also sufficiently flexible and neutral to successfully maintain its relevance for this families ever growing and evolving needs. This home is a reason to stay.
