Winning a RIBA London Award 2016, Finalised for AJ small projects 2017 & Recognised as an outstanding nursery by Ofsted. The Bath House Children's Community Centre is located in the heart of Hackney. The brief was to extend the ‘Lilac Room’, a hugely undersized space which accommodates 3 -5 year olds in preparation for school, to make the existing space larger, improve the light, the access to the garden and provide an exciting, inspiring and dynamic space to assist in the development of the children. Our concept was to separate the space in to two zones, the ground level and the mezzanine, to extend to the rear and to amalgamate the existing separate rear rooms in to one large area. The result is a large open plan play space to the ground with a play den and sleeping platform at mezzanine level. The two areas have been imaginatively separated by a timber tree which grows from the yellow rubber floor towards the large roof lights above and cleverly creates the barriers between the various spaces. The ‘tree house’ structure positively dominates the space positively and subtly provokes play, serenity and the opportunity to both hide and seek.
