The brief for the project stemmed from a typical issue with many Edwardian properties; a lack of connection to the garden and a shortage of modern, multifunctional, family social spaces. The family wished to overcome these key challenges whilst creating a unique extension that added further character to their period home. This was to be achieved for a modest budget of £100,000. The extension itself is to the side of the rear “outrigger” and envelopes an otherwise unusable space of only two metres wide. This creates a much wider kitchen which also contains a small lounge area that connects to the dining room in the centre of the house. In addition, a downstairs WC and cloakroom space is positioned adjacent to the existing cellar access; its provision now providing visitors and future occupants with more accessible washing facilities. The floor level of the outrigger and extension is dropped, with a new wider staircase installed between the dining room and kitchen. This in turn leads to a more accessible route to the garden. The primary elevation to the rear utilises a smooth mixed red quarry tile, laid in a stack bond, as a gentle nod to the stock brick used on the front elevation of the house and for the lintels to the rear. The tiles are then punctured by a large glazed opening that combines the small garden with the kitchen to expand the feeling of space even further. Matching common brickwork then forms the new party wall with the neighbour and is exposed internally, with the same brickwork found on the garden walls. As part of the brief, the family asked for natural light to be a prominent feature as they were concerned that the position of the extension would cause the central dining room to become dark. Initial concepts included a full glazed roof to the extension, yet it was felt that this provided little privacy from the adjoining neighbours windows. To overcome this we created three roof lights, contained within a folded maple veneer ceiling. The first two reveals are angled to conceal the view
