This Children's and Young People's Centre is one of the largest children's cancer treatment centres in Europe. The project involved the construction of a new build two-storey extension and the refurbishment of existing ward accommodation. The new build extension accommodates paediatric in-patients at ground floor and a dedicated facility for teenagers at first floor level, which is the first of it’s kind in South London. The refurbished ward areas provide day care and outpatients facilities. The design maximises natural light to patient areas and creating views to the outside and the exterior bronze façade was chosen for it’s sustainable, natural and recyclable qualities. The internal layout with a central nurses hub, generous circulation and good relationships to the patient areas creates a welcoming environment to make children feel at home. The interior design and finishes incorporated fun and imaginative solutions to seating, storage, wall finishes and lighting; all enhancing the aim to create a non-clinical environment whilst still achieving compliance with healthcare design standards. The bedrooms incorporate state-of-art audiovisual systems, gaming, internet and ambient lighting, all controllable from the beds. The ambient lighting above the beds was used to create a feeling of calmness for the patients in line with CABE and Well Being and Design Guidance. The proposals also included the creation of several external areas planted and landscaped for use as therapeutic spaces.
