Alteration to existing property, Within a Conservation Area
Anne Netherwood Chartered Architect
11 Cottage Fields , St. Martins , OSWESTRY , Shropshire , SY11 3EJ
The house was built in the early 20th century, in the Arts and Crafts style. It is within the Chirk Conservation Area and adjacent to the Chirk Viaduct and Aqueduct, part of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site. The house is mentioned by name in the Chirk Conservation Area Character Assessment and Management Plan as “of high architectural value to the Conservation Area, retaining much of its original character and having group value with the other Arts and Crafts influenced buildings...” The garden is also mentioned as containing fine trees which add colour to the views from the World Heritage Site. We measured the existing building and drew up options for the re-ordering to accommodate a wheelchair-bound relative. I liaised with the Conservation Officer and obtained planning permission for a new garage and workshop, together with the alterations to the house. One of the conditions of the Planning Permission is that details of the garden design should be submitted once construction begins, and I will be helping the client with this.
