Western Road is a single-storey, ground floor extension to a typical early 20th Century semi-detached house in Haywards Heath. The client originally made contact with APA in 2018 and spent time developing the ideas for the scheme through to final occupation in 2024. The project replaces a much smaller ground floor kitchen, which was separated from the living and dining spaces, and involved some reworking of the existing internal layout alongside the extension, which required minor structural work to the existing rear elevation to form the connection. The main characteristic of the project is that the superstructure is formed in timber portal frames in its entirety, greatly limiting its embodied carbon and creating a warm, natural space.
