Southwark

Within a Conservation Area
Our clients approached us with what they thought was an impossible task - doubling their ground floor accommodation whilst remaining friends with their neighbours. An abundance of daylight and a good connection with the garden were top priorities. The single storey rear extension is sandwiched between the neighbours’ existing out-houses, and provides a kitchen dining space, a utility room, a secure office and a sitting area. From the outset, the impact of an extension on the neighbour's was the primary consideration and the form was sculpted so that it did not interrupt their existing sight-lines. In addition, the stringent Dulwich Estate and Southwark Conservation Area guidelines were considered and adhered to. Our focus was to breathe new life into a dark, inward looking Edwardian house by forging positive connectivity between inside and outside, bringing light and air deep into the ground floor accommodation, whilst also meeting the demanding brief.
