The Nursery Inn is a public house built in 1939 for Hydes Brewery and remains in the ownership of that company. The current building replaced a 19th Century public house on that site and the name is thought to have derived from a plant nursery that previously occupied the land. The bowling club to the rear was established in 1917 and the public house was used as the first headquarters of the Stockport County Football Club. The public house built in 1939 was one of very few built in England in the inter war period and was designed as an ‘improved’ or ‘reformed’ public house intended to attract responsible drinkers with a range of customer offering beyond just the sale of alcohol. The Nursery Inn has within its layout designated rooms such as Lounge, Smoke Room and Vault and terrace to offer a variety of facilities aimed at a range of different customers. The aim of this project was to restore and emphasise the character and differentiation of these separate spaces through careful use of appropriate 1930's influences materials, colours and designs.
