Sawley Medical Centre replaces two smaller surgeries for the Moir Medical Group. The brief was to provide the community with better services in a contemporary building, connected to a pharmacy, and to achieve BREEAM ‘Very Good’. The new surgery is part single storey, containing the consulting and treatment rooms, and a minor operations suite. The two-storey element accommodates the pharmacy, staff areas and a health education room. High-level windows and rooflights bring in ample amounts of daylight, whilst retaining privacy for patients. The waiting area is fully glazed to create a pleasant environment for patients and visitors. The building incorporates a variety of sustainable measures over and above building regulations, including a large photovoltaic array, high levels of insulation and an airtight envelope to minimise heating and cooling demands, and the curved glulam roof is blanketed in a wildflower meadow, to increase biodiversity.
