Sited in Greenbelt land, New Build
Criftin Mill is a replacement house in Green Belt land. The house was designed to respond to the unique and special site, which is bounded by a beck to the west and has fantastic views across surrounding fields. The building concept is based on the form and materials of the agricultural vernacular surrounding the site. A red multi brick was used at ground floor, with richly coloured oak timber cladding boards above. Feature projections are highlighted in a dark grey aluminium cladding, such as the picture box window from the master bedroom, which frames views over the fields. A cantilevered external balcony projects over the beck, providing a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the scenery. The house was designed using a fabric first approach, which takes into account building orientation, internal organisation, and high level of insulation, to help reduce energy demands. A number of eco technologies are incorporated into the design, including an air source heat pump, solar hot water heating and a whole house ventilation and heat recovery system.
