New Build
AHR was commissioned to carry out design and delivery of a large 6 level multi-storey car park to sit alongside the main land side elevation of the new Terminal 2A building. The two structures are separated by a large covered court, the front door to the new terminal building with approximately 30 million passengers passing through it each year. The covered court is approximately 120m in length, 30m wide and 30m high - comparable in size to the great turbine hall at the Tate Modern, and houses a large suspended art installation that will become a highly recognisable part of the Heathrow experience. The project was designed and documented using a Revit BIM approach across all disciplines and construction. The covered court is central to the project providing both an architecturally inspiring space as well as the critical 30m security stand-off from the façade of the terminal. The area is covered by an extension to the terminal building roof continuing the aesthetic of the terminal building into the covered space and the finishes are designed to extend the quality of the passenger experience beyond the terminal. It provides a transitional experience for all the departing / arriving passengers moving to / from the new terminal building using bridge =link connections at levels 10 and 50.
