Kensington and Chelsea
£10m to £49.99M
Within a Conservation Area, New Build
The design is due for completion in 2012. A landmark education scheme within the Kensington Conservation Area, it will provide accommodation for 1,500 students aged between11 18 years old and over 100 staff. The buildings orientation, massing and distinctive louvers prevent excessive heat gains into classrooms, while still letting in abundant daylight. A full-length atrium admits light deep into the lower floors, reducing the need for artificial lighting and facilitating cross ventilation and a heat-stack effect. High thermal mass and building management system-controlled night purge ventilation reduces the need for cooling. Low carbon technologies such as ground source heating and cooling and a combined heat and power boiler and solar-water heaters lower the buildings overall energy use.
